In New Delhi, marvel at the colonial elegance of India Gate and Rashtrapati Bhavan, and discover architectural masterpieces like Humayun’s Tomb, Qutub Minar, and the serene Lotus and Akshardham Temples.

Savor authentic Rajasthani cuisine and be enchanted by a traditional folk dance performance under the desert sky.

En route to Agra, stop at Abhaneri, home to an extraordinary stepwell, and Fatehpur Sikri, the hauntingly beautiful Mughal capital frozen in time. In Agra, witness the sunrise over the ethereal Taj Mahal, a timeless monument of love. Explore the grand Agra Fort, admire the delicate artistry of Itmad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), and enjoy a unique sunset view of the Taj from Mehtab Bagh, across the Yamuna River.

Next, board an overnight train to the holiest city in India—Varanasi. Here, time seems to stand still as spirituality and daily life intertwine along the banks of the Ganges. Witness the magical Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat, float at dawn on a sacred boat ride, and explore ancient temples such as Kashi Vishwanath, Durga Temple, and Sankat Mochan. Take an excursion to Sarnath, where the Buddha delivered his first sermon, and feel the deep tranquility of this sacred Buddhist site.

Your journey concludes in Delhi, where your final evening invites you to reflect on the beauty, chaos, silence, and divinity that define India.

This Golden Triangle with Varanasi tour is more than just a trip—it’s a deeply enriching passage through India’s spiritual essence, royal past, and vibrant present.

Essential Information

Wondering if this trip is right for you?
We’re here to help! If you have any questions about the trip’s difficulty level, feel free to reach out—we’ll ensure you have all the details you need.

An Unforgettable Itinerary
Designed for curious and adventurous travelers, this journey takes you through the cultural and historical wonders of northern India. Expect an action-packed schedule with early starts, long but rewarding days, and immersive experiences. India’s energy can be intense, with vibrant streets and warm temperatures, but you’ll also find moments of tranquility. One thing is certain—you’ll return home with incredible stories and lasting memories.

Travel Times & Flexibility
The travel times listed in the itinerary refer to driving durations and don’t account for stops along the way. Road conditions, traffic, and weather—especially during December and January—can sometimes lead to longer journeys. Severe fog during these months may also impact train schedules. In such cases, we’ll arrange a comfortable private bus. If neither bus nor flight travel is possible, we have an exciting alternative itinerary featuring Bharatpur, Deeg Palace, and Mathura instead of Varanasi.

Monument Access & Conservation
India’s iconic landmarks, including the Taj Mahal, are preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Occasionally, maintenance or restoration work may be in progress at sites we visit. ASI does not provide advance notice of such projects, but rest assured, every site we visit will still hold its breathtaking charm.

Festivals: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Experience
For select departures, you may have the unique opportunity to witness India’s most famous festivals, Holi and Diwali. These vibrant celebrations differ by region, and while we always strive to include festival experiences, the nature of these events can vary. No matter what, expect an atmosphere full of color, culture, and unforgettable moments.

Accessibility & Comfort
While this trip is generally not recommended for travelers with reduced mobility, we know that every adventurer is different. If you’re an experienced traveler on similar journeys, get in touch with us—we’d love to discuss how we can accommodate your needs.

Golden Triangle tour with Varanasi Trip Notes

1. Food & Drink

Meals are included as per the daily itinerary. India is renowned for its diverse and flavorful cuisine, offering an array of curries, tandoori dishes, biryanis, and non-vegetarian options. Vegetarians will find India to be an especially rewarding destination, with a wide selection of dishes to enjoy. Be sure to try traditional Indian desserts and beverages, including sweet and salted lassi—a refreshing yogurt-based drink.

We recommend budgeting around 1,500-2,500 rupees (approximately €15-€30) per day for lunch and dinner. Most towns you visit will feature a variety of dining options, including both Indian and Western cuisine. Please note that service in restaurants can be slower than expected, so plan accordingly. Tea and soft drinks are generally very affordable, while a large bottle of local beer costs approximately 400 rupees (about €5).

Mineral water is easily accessible, but to minimize plastic waste, drinking water will be provided in bulk on the bus. We encourage you to bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout your journey.

2. Transport

Transportation

Throughout this journey, your transportation will be carefully curated for comfort, convenience, and cultural immersion.
  • For overland travel between cities like Delhi, Jaipur, and Agra, a modern, air-conditioned vehicle will be provided. Depending on the size of the group, this may be a comfortable mini-bus for smaller groups or a spacious coach for larger groups—each equipped with air conditioning, cushioned seating, and ample room for luggage.
  • All road journeys are designed to be scenic and comfortable, with regular breaks and opportunities to stop at local attractions, such as the impressive Abhaneri stepwell and the ghostly grandeur of Fatehpur Sikri.
  • To ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience, complimentary bottled water will be available during road transfers, and vehicles will be maintained to the highest standards of safety and hygiene.

  • Train Journey:
  • Your overnight journey from Agra to Varanasi will be aboard a reserved sleeper class train, offering an authentic taste of Indian rail travel. Berths will be pre-booked, and the compartment will be comfortable and secure for a restful journey. This overnight train offers a unique window into everyday life in India while ensuring you arrive in Varanasi refreshed for a full day of exploration.

  • Flight:
  • The final leg of your journey from Varanasi back to Delhi will be via a domestic flight, ensuring you travel efficiently and comfortably. Airport transfers will be arranged for both departure and arrival, and our representatives will assist with check-in and boarding processes to make the transition seamless.

  • Whether you are gliding through Rajasthan’s historic landscapes, experiencing the spiritual pulse of Varanasi, or returning to Delhi’s vibrant rhythm, every part of your journey is designed to keep you relaxed, safe, and connected to the heart of India.

    3. Weather & Seasonality

The weather across your destinations will vary depending on the season, so understanding the climate of each region can help you prepare for your trip. Here’s a breakdown of the typical weather patterns for each location:

    Delhi
  • Winter (November to February): Delhi experiences cool and crisp weather, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 20°C (41°F to 68°F). Fog can be common during the early mornings, especially in December and January, which may impact visibility. This is the most comfortable season to explore the city.
  • Summer (March to June): Delhi heats up significantly, with temperatures often reaching over 40°C (104°F), making sightseeing less enjoyable. The air is dry, and the city can become quite uncomfortable.
  • Monsoon (July to September): While the monsoon brings moderate rainfall, the humidity is high, and temperatures drop slightly, though it can still feel warm and sticky. There can also be occasional disruptions to travel plans due to the rain.

  • Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan
  • Winter (November to February): Agra enjoys mild, pleasant weather in the winter, with temperatures ranging from 5°C to 25°C (41°F to 77°F). Early mornings can be foggy, but this season is perfect for visiting iconic sites like the Taj Mahal.
  • Summer (March to June): Summer in Agra is extremely hot, with temperatures regularly exceeding 40°C (104°F). It’s advisable to visit early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the midday heat.
  • Monsoon (July to September): The monsoon season brings moderate rainfall, which can make the temperatures more tolerable, but it also leads to higher humidity and occasional travel disruptions.

  • Jaipur
  • Winter (November to February): Jaipur has a mild winter, with daytime temperatures between 10°C and 25°C (50°F to 77°F), making it perfect for sightseeing. The evenings can be a bit chilly, so a light jacket is recommended.
  • Summer (March to June): The heat can be intense in Jaipur during summer, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F). Exploring the city in the midday sun can be uncomfortable, so it’s best to visit the attractions early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Monsoon (July to September): Monsoon rains bring cooler temperatures, though they can be accompanied by high humidity and occasional downpours. The city becomes greener during this time, though travel might be slightly impacted by rain.

  • Varanasi
  • Winter (November to February): Winter in Varanasi is pleasant and ideal for sightseeing and attending the famous Ganga Aarti. Temperatures range between 7°C and 22°C (45°F to 72°F). Mornings and evenings can be foggy and chilly, so carrying warm clothing is advisable.
  • Summer (March to June): Summers in Varanasi are hot and dry, with temperatures often soaring above 40°C (104°F). The intense heat can make midday exploration challenging, so early mornings and evenings are the best times to venture out.
  • Monsoon (July to September): The monsoon brings moderate to heavy rainfall, high humidity, and a lush, green environment. Temperatures drop slightly, but the air remains warm and damp. Be prepared for occasional delays or travel disruptions due to rain.

Our goal is to provide you with a smooth and enriching travel experience, ensuring you don’t miss any of the highlights.

    5. What to Take

    Essential Equipment
While the choice of luggage is flexible, we recommend a soft holdall (with wheels if needed) or a backpack, as these are easier to manage, especially during overnight train journeys. It’s best to pack just one checked bag, as you will be required to carry your own luggage at times.

In keeping with local traditions, we suggest packing clothing that covers your shoulders and reaches at least to the knee. This is particularly important when visiting temples and sacred sites.

    Other Essential Items Include:

    • Small backpack for valuables
    • Sunhat and sunglasses
    • Sunscreen and lip balm with sun protection
    • Light, casual clothing
    • Warm sweater or fleece
    • Torch (flashlight)
    • Comfortable walking shoes
    • Sandals
    • Anti-bacterial hand gel
    • Insect repellent
    • Small first-aid kit
    • Cable lock or small chain and padlock to secure your bag on the train
    • Refillable water bottle

For those traveling from December to early February, warm clothing is essential. Early mornings and evenings, especially at Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, can be unexpectedly cool, with temperatures ranging from 6°C to 20°C (43°F to 68°F). Be prepared for both cold and warm temperatures during the winter months.

Please pack electronic devices, power banks, and batteries in your hand luggage, as these are not permitted in checked baggage.

    Optional Items:

    • Light waterproof jacket
    • Earplugs
    • Money belt
    • Travel pillow
    • Face mask (due to high air pollution in Delhi, especially in November, with some occurrences in late October and early December)

     Prohibited Items in India:

    • E-cigarettes and related products are prohibited. You cannot bring them into India or purchase them locally. Please ensure they are not packed in your luggage.
    • Satellite communication devices, such as Garmin inReach or other GPS tracking devices, are illegal in India without a license. Please refrain from bringing these items

    6. Practical Information

    Passport
Before you travel internationally, make sure to check your passport’s expiration date. Many countries, including India, require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond your planned return date.

    Visa for India
To avoid issues at immigration, ensure your passport is valid for a minimum of 180 days from the date of arrival in India.

Travelers from the UK, US, Canada, and the EU typically need a visa to enter India. Visa requirements can change, so it’s important to verify the specific visa requirements for your nationality. We strongly recommend checking with the nearest Indian embassy or consulate, and also reviewing requirements for any countries you may transit through.

For your convenience, here are links to visa information for travelers from various countries:

    • Australia: Smartraveller – India
    • Canada:gc.ca – India
    • United Kingdom:uk – India Entry Requirements
    • United States:State.Gov – India

For travelers eligible for an e-visa (including citizens of the UK, US, Canada, and the EU), applications can be submitted online at: Indian e-Visa.

For more detailed information on the visa application process, including required details for your start hotel and local reference contacts, please refer to the Indian Visa Information document.

    7. Vaccinations & Health

    India
If you are traveling from a country where yellow fever is a risk, you will need to show proof of a yellow fever vaccination. Some travelers may also be required to provide evidence of a polio vaccination. We advise confirming all necessary vaccinations and health recommendations with your healthcare provider or travel clinic.

It’s also a good idea to consider vaccinations for:

    • Tetanus
    • Hepatitis A
    • Typhoid
    • Cholera
    • Hepatitis B
    • Japanese encephalitis
    • Rabies
    • Tuberculosis

While the risk of malaria is low, we recommend consulting your doctor or a travel health clinic for personalized advice.

Dengue fever and chikungunya are prevalent in India. Both are mosquito-borne diseases spread by daytime mosquitoes. Since there is no vaccine or preventive medication available for either, the most effective way to avoid them is by preventing mosquito bites. Be sure to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and stay in places with proper mosquito protection.

For trips that reach higher altitudes (over 6,560ft / 2,000m), the risk of mosquito-borne diseases is low. However, for journeys above 9,840ft (3,000m), there is a potential risk of altitude sickness. Our itineraries are designed to help you acclimatize, but it’s important to be aware that altitude sickness can still occur. Please refer to the Trip Notes for further information.

Although malaria risk is low, it’s still a good idea to seek guidance from your GP or a travel health clinic for further advice.

    8. Electricity in India - Plug types

India uses three main types of electrical plugs, which are C, D, and M. The standard voltage is 230V and the frequency is 50Hz. Let’s break down the plug types:

    1. Type C – Two Round Pins
    • Description: Two round pins that are typically used for smaller appliances.
    • Common Use: Found on many smaller household devices like phone chargers and laptops.

    Money

    Currency
India’s official currency is the Indian Rupee (INR). Please note that importing or exporting rupees is prohibited. It’s also important to avoid accepting damaged or heavily worn banknotes, as these may not be recognized as legal tender in India.

At the end of your trip, you can exchange any leftover rupees back into US dollars, British pounds, or euros at the airport. However, to facilitate the exchange, you will need to show the receipt from your initial currency exchange.

    ATM Access
ATMs are widely available throughout India, and most accept Visa and Mastercard. Credit cards are also commonly accepted in larger shops and establishments. We recommend informing your bank of your travel plans in advance to avoid any issues with card blocks during your trip. Always carry the relevant contact details for your bank in case of emergency.

While cards are widely accepted, we advise bringing US dollars, British pounds, or euros as backup currency. Currency exchange facilities are available at Delhi Airport upon arrival, though exchange rates are often more favorable in central Delhi. You’ll also find currency exchange services in major cities like Jaipur, Agra, and Varanasi.

    Extra Expenses & Spending Money

Many attractions now charge a small fee for the use of video cameras (e.g., handy cams), so it’s a good idea to set aside around 665 INR (approximately €7) for this. For personal expenses such as soft drinks, we recommend budgeting 570 INR (around €6) per day.

India is a haven for shoppers, with countless opportunities to buy souvenirs, handicrafts, and local goods. Even those who typically avoid shopping might find it hard to resist the vibrant markets and artisan workshops.

Throughout your tour, your local guides may take you to emporiums and craft workshops. Shopping is an integral part of the cultural experience, but if you’d prefer not to participate, simply inform your guide or tour leader in advance. Many travelers enjoy picking up local handicrafts, silk, jewelry, and carpets, making it a great opportunity to purchase unique, high-quality items.
